Sentinel Risk Management software is compliant with the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) from the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) -- 23 February 2007
NRLS-compliant web-based reporting tool from Vantage Technologies helps NHS organisations to manage risk and improve patient safety.

Vantage Technologies' Sentinel Local Risk Management System (v1.3) has now achieved NRLS compliance from The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), making it a fully NRLS-compliant risk management solution available to NHS organisations.

The certification of compliance follows sign-offs on submissions from both Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and Mid Yorkshire NHS Trusts. The solution plays a vital role in helping Trusts meet the mandatory reporting regulations of the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS), which enables the NPSA to identify trends in patient safety, reduce risk and set out priorities and best practice, as outlined as a key action in Sir Liam Donaldson's report, Safety First1.

Developed by Vantage Technologies, Sentinel is a fully NRLS-compliant risk management solution, and the only solution to enable pre-mapping of the entire NRLS dataset including the full medication data set.

Sentinel Risk Management is a web-based solution which enables staff to log in and report patient safety incidents on-site or remotely, simplifying the reporting process and making it more of an integral part of working practice for all staff, promoting a safety culture and ensuring lessons are learned from patient safety incidents.

The web-based approach means risk can be analysed and managed in real-time and is being used by Trusts across the UK to meet mandatory reporting requirements, providing timely and effective risk management and further improving patient safety levels.

Tim Ray, Customer Service Director at Vantage Technologies said:

Sentinel Risk Management enables NHS organisations not only to meet mandatory reporting requirements, but also to adopt a more proactive approach to risk management to enhance staff and patient safety and deliver the best possible levels of care.

Achieving NRLS compliance is testament to the quality of our solution and we will continue to work closely with customers and the National Patient Safety Agency to develop new ways of monitoring and managing risk.

The solution has been successfully deployed at Sedgefield PCT where the number of patient incidents logged has risen by 500% since implementation. It has enabled Sedgefield to record and manage incidents more effectively, helping to identify incident themes and trends and improve the overall quality of patient care.

For Birmingham East and North PCT deployment of Sentinel Risk Management has increased incident reporting by 70%. The solution has lowered administration levels, freeing up valuable time and allowing clinical staff to spend more time delivering care to patients.

Birmingham East and North PCT favours internet-based reporting solution for real-time risk management -- 17 November 2006
Merged Birmingham PCTs opt for Sentinel solution to manage risk and improve patient care for 437,500 local population.

Birmingham East and North PCT, whose merger was formally approved earlier this year, has signalled its commitment to real-time risk management and a better patient experience, by extending its use the internet-based Sentinel reporting solution.

The PCT employs 1,300 staff and 237 GPs at 87 practices, delivering healthcare services to a local population of 437,500. Eastern Birmingham PCT has already been successfully using the Sentinel for the past 18 months, and the risk management solution will now be rolled out further across the newly-merged PCT, in order to improve overall working practices and patient care.

Since the introduction of Sentinel, incident reporting at the PCT has increased by 70%, ensuring incidents are dealt with in real-time and enabling the Trust to analyse and understand any staff or patient issues so that preventative measures can be taken and improvements made for the future.

Sentinel is an internet-based risk management solution from Vantage Technologies, and has provided the Trust with a proactive means of managing risk, through early identification and the monitoring and analysis of trends. Incident reports are logged and processed in real-time, and automatically sent to relevant line managers across the trust so that appropriate action can be taken.

Before the Sentinel risk management solution was in place, the PCT used a paper-based system, which was both labour-intensive and time-consuming, with incidents taking on average six weeks to be logged and acted upon. The Trust did look at a number of alternative solutions including Datix and Cams, but was impressed by the web-based nature of the Sentinel solution, which enabled flexible, remote access and which did not take up valuable bandwidth on the PCT server.

Mark Cheshire, Risk Manager at Birmingham East and North PCT said:

Sentinel has ensured we meet the mandatory reporting requirements of the National Patient Safety Agency (NSPA) and Health Care Commission (HCC) and has also delivered a number of key commercial benefits to ensure best value and optimum performance levels.

A key benefit to staff and to the Trust is the system's usability - a simplified reporting format and secure remote access via NHS.net means less administration, enabling clinical staff to spend more time delivering care to patients. Effective trend analysis has also helped the Trust to avoid issues such as inappropriate referrals, freeing up valuable time and resources and improving overall service to patients.

Given the success of the system to date in boosting reporting levels and helping to reduce risk, the Trust now plans to roll the system out to all staff across the PCT, including to all third party contracted partners such as dentists and pharmacists, for a holistic and comprehensive reporting process on a PCT-wide basis.
